Tools / URL slug generator

Turn a headline into a clean URL.

Lowercase, hyphenated, no punctuation, no accents. Optionally drop the small words that make a URL longer without making it clearer.

Your slug

Type a headline to build a slug.

How to use this well

Short and readable beats keyword-stuffed. A slug is read by people in search results and in shared links, and a URL packed with repeated terms looks like what it is.

Once a page is published and indexed, changing its slug means changing its URL. Do that only with a redirect in place, or you lose whatever rankings and links the old address had.

Dropping stop words like a, the and of usually helps, but not when it makes the slug ambiguous. The toggle is there because the right answer depends on the headline.

This runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored.

Common questions

Should slugs use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators and underscores as joiners, so an underscore can make two words read as one.

How long should a slug be?

Long enough to say what the page is, short enough to read at a glance. Three to six words covers most pages.

Can I change a slug later?

You can, but set up a redirect from the old URL first. Without one, existing links and rankings point at a page that no longer exists.
