Glossary / Subject line

What is Subject line?

The subject line is the one line that decides whether your email gets opened. It has to earn attention in a crowded inbox in about a second.

Everything else in your email depends on this. Unopened is the same as unsent. The sender name, the subject line, and the preview text are the whole pitch, and a phone shows maybe forty characters of it.

Specific beats clever most of the time. 'Your invoice is ready' and '3 things to check before winter' both promise something clear. 'Big news!' promises nothing and reads like every other message in the folder.

Avoid the tricks. Fake 'Re:' prefixes, all caps, and manufactured urgency win opens once and collect complaints after. Test two versions on similar groups and let the results settle the argument.
