Glossary / Open Graph

What is Open Graph?

Open Graph tags are the meta tags that control how a link looks when shared: the title, description and image in the preview card.

When a link is pasted into a social network or a messaging app, the platform reads Open Graph tags from the page to build the preview. Without them it guesses, usually badly.

Four tags do most of the work: the title, the description, the image and the canonical URL. The image has the largest effect on whether anyone clicks, and getting the dimensions wrong is the most common cause of an ugly crop.

They have no direct effect on ranking. They have a large effect on the click-through rate of every link you or anyone else ever shares, which is worth more than the ranking argument.
