Glossary / Schema markup

What is Schema markup?

Schema markup is code that labels what your page is about, so search engines know a number is a price, a rating, or an event date.

A page might show a score, a dollar amount, and a date. A person reads those as a rating, a price, and when the thing happens. Schema markup is the extra code that says so outright, using a shared vocabulary published at schema.org.

When search engines trust the labels, they can dress up your listing with stars, prices, cooking times, or expandable questions. Those richer listings take up more room in results and tend to pull more clicks.

Common types for small businesses are LocalBusiness, Product, Recipe, Article, FAQ, and Event. Most website platforms have a plugin that adds them. Test what you publish with Google's Rich Results Test, and never label something the page does not actually show.
