Glossary / Keyword difficulty

What is Keyword difficulty?

Keyword difficulty estimates how hard it is to rank on the first page for a search term. Higher difficulty means stronger sites already hold the spots.

SEO tools score keywords on how tough the competition is, usually from 0 to 100. The score mostly reflects the backlinks and authority of the pages already ranking.

For a newer or smaller site, difficulty is a filter. A term dominated by household names is not worth your next six months. A term where small businesses rank is a real opening.

Balance difficulty against search volume and intent. A low-difficulty term with buyers behind it beats a high-volume term you will never crack.
