Glossary / UTM parameters
What is UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are short tags added to a link so your analytics can tell exactly where a visitor came from, like a specific email or social post.
A plain link tells your analytics someone arrived. A link with UTM tags says they came from the April newsletter, or the Tuesday Facebook post. The tags are just extra text after the question mark in the URL.
There are five standard tags. Source is where the link lived, like 'newsletter'. Medium is the channel type, like 'email'. Campaign names the effort, like 'spring-sale'. Term and content are optional detail.
Pick a naming convention and stick to it. 'Email', 'email', and 'e-mail' show up as three different sources and quietly wreck your reports.
