Glossary / Unique visitors
What is Unique visitors?
Unique visitors estimates how many different people visited in a period. Each person counts once, no matter how many times they come back.
If one person visits six times this month, page views count six loads, sessions count six visits, and unique visitors counts one. It is the closest thing analytics has to a headcount.
It is really a count of devices and browsers, not humans. Someone who reads on a phone at lunch and a laptop in the evening shows up as two. Cleared cookies, private windows, and blocked scripts split people further. Treat the number as an estimate, because that is what it is.
Uniques for a month will always be lower than the four weekly numbers added together, since the same person appears in several weeks. Do not add periods up. Pull the number for the period you actually care about.
