Glossary / Page views

What is Page views?

A page view is one loading of a page on your site. Reloading the same page counts again, so page views always run higher than visitors.

Every time a page loads, analytics records a page view. One visitor reading four articles produces four page views. That same visitor refreshing an article twice adds two more.

Because of that, page views measure activity, not audience. If you want people, look at unique visitors. If you want visits, look at sessions. Mixing the three up is the most common way a traffic report gets oversold.

Page views are still useful at the page level. Sorting your pages by views tells you what the site is actually being used for, which is often not what the homepage suggests.
