Glossary / Traffic source

What is Traffic source?

A traffic source is where a visitor came from before landing on your site: search, social, email, a link elsewhere, or your address typed in.

Analytics sorts visits into buckets: organic search, paid search, social, email, referral from another website, and direct. Direct is the catch-all for visits with no recorded origin.

Direct gets misread as people who typed your address in. In practice it also collects clicks from apps, PDFs, messaging tools, and any link that lost its tracking on the way. A large direct bucket usually means missing tags, not fame.

You can fix much of that by tagging your own links with UTM parameters, so the campaign, source, and medium travel with the click. Untagged links leave analytics guessing.

In Creaiter

Creaiter's Google Analytics integration groups your visits by source, so you can see which channel the traffic actually came from.
