Glossary / List segmentation

What is List segmentation?

List segmentation splits your email list into groups that get different messages, based on who those people are or what they have done.

One list holds many kinds of people. New subscribers, repeat customers, people who clicked but never bought. Segmentation groups them so each group gets a message written for their situation.

Useful splits are usually simple: customers versus non-customers, active versus quiet, by product interest, by location. You do not need twenty segments. Two good ones beat a blast to everyone.

The test is whether the segment changes what you would say. If two groups would get the same email anyway, the split is decoration. Judge segments by whether the targeted send performs better than the general one.
