Glossary / Heatmap
What is Heatmap?
A heatmap is a color-coded picture of where people click, move, and scroll on a page. Warm colors mark the busiest spots.
A heatmap tool records visitor behavior and paints it over a screenshot of your page. Red and orange mark the areas people touch most, cooler colors mark the parts they ignore.
Three kinds are common. Click maps show where people tap. Scroll maps show how far down the page people get. Move maps track cursor movement, which is a loose stand-in for attention and nothing more.
They are best at raising questions, not answering them. People clicking a heading that is not a link is a real finding. A quiet section is not, because you still have to work out whether it is boring, badly placed, or simply too far down the page.
