Glossary / Header tags

What is Header tags?

Header tags are the headings that break a page into sections, from the H1 title down through H2 and H3. They give a page structure readers can scan.

H1 is the page's main title. H2s are the sections under it. H3s are the subsections under those. The numbers describe an outline, not a font size, even though most sites style them that way.

Readers scan headings before they read anything else. If your H2s alone tell the story, the page works. If they say things like Introduction and Final thoughts, you are wasting the most-read words on the page.

Search engines use headings to understand what each part covers, and they often pull a heading plus the sentence after it into a featured snippet. Use one H1 per page and nest in order. Jumping from H2 to H4 confuses screen readers.
