Glossary / Generative engine optimization
What is Generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making content likely to be quoted by AI answer engines rather than only ranked by search engines.
GEO is SEO's newer sibling. The target is not a blue link position but a citation inside an AI-written answer, whether that is Google's AI Overviews, an assistant, or a chat-based search tool.
The overlap with SEO is large and worth being honest about. Answer engines mostly draw from pages that already rank, so most of GEO is ordinary SEO plus a structural discipline: short self-contained answers, real questions as headings, specifics rather than generalities, and claims a machine can attribute.
The part that is genuinely different is what survives summarising. Original data, a strong stated opinion and first-hand experience are hard to paraphrase away. Generic advice is exactly what gets absorbed into an answer with no citation.

Creaiter writes in your voice from your own material, which is the part of a page a summary cannot replace with an average of the internet.
