Glossary / Domain authority

What is Domain authority?

Domain authority is a third-party score estimating how likely a site is to rank in search. Google does not use it, but marketers use it to compare sites.

Domain authority was invented by an SEO software company, not by Google. It looks at a site's backlinks and other signals, then produces a score from 1 to 100. Similar scores exist under other names from other tools.

It is useful for rough comparisons. If a competitor scores far above you, outranking them on competitive terms will take time. It also helps you judge whether a site linking to you carries weight.

Do not chase the score itself. It moves slowly and indirectly. Publish content worth linking to and the score follows.
