Glossary / Backlink
What is Backlink?
A backlink is a link from someone else's website to yours. Search engines treat backlinks as votes of confidence, so good ones can lift your rankings.
When another site links to your page, that is a backlink. Search engines see it as a recommendation. A link from a respected industry site counts for far more than one from a random directory.
You earn backlinks by publishing things worth citing: original data, useful guides, tools, strong opinions. You can also get them through guest posts, partnerships, and local press.
Avoid buying links or joining link schemes. Search engines penalize those, and the penalty costs more than the links were ever worth.
