Glossary / Dofollow link

What is Dofollow link?

A dofollow link is an ordinary link that passes ranking credit to the page it points to. It is the default, so most links are dofollow already.

There is no dofollow tag to add. The word exists only as the opposite of nofollow. If a link carries no special attribute, search engines treat it as a normal recommendation and pass some credit along.

That credit is why people chase links from respected sites. A dofollow link from a publication your industry actually reads tells search engines that someone with a reputation vouched for your page.

You cannot control how other sites link to you, and forcing it goes badly. Publish something worth citing, then let editors link however they want. A nofollow link from a real audience still sends real readers.
