Glossary / Cannibalization
What is Cannibalization?
Cannibalization is when two or more of your own pages target the same keyword, so they compete with each other and neither ranks as well as it could.
You publish a post about best running shoes. A year later someone on your team writes another one. Now the search engine has to pick, and it may split the signals between them or settle on the weaker page.
You spot it by searching your own site for a keyword and counting how many pages go after it. Rank tracking helps too. If two addresses keep swapping positions for the same term, they are fighting each other.
The usual fix is to merge. Fold the weaker page into the stronger one, redirect the old address, and keep a single page that answers the question fully. Sometimes the better fix is to re-aim one page at a different search intent.
