Glossary / Email list hygiene
What is Email list hygiene?
List hygiene is regularly removing dead, bouncing, and long-inactive addresses from your email list. A smaller engaged list outperforms a big stale one.
Lists rot. People change jobs, abandon addresses, and lose interest. Every send to a dead address is a small vote against you with mailbox providers, and the votes add up.
Cleaning means three things. Remove hard bounces right away. Retire addresses that have not opened anything in six months or a year, after one honest attempt to win them back. And never buy a list, which is the fastest way to undo all of it.
Watch the subscriber count drop and resist flinching. Open rates and delivery usually improve the moment the deadweight leaves, because you are now sending to people who actually read you.
