Glossary / Churn rate

What is Churn rate?

Churn rate is the share of customers or subscribers who leave during a period. Divide the number who left by the number you started with.

Start the month with 200 subscribers. Twelve cancel. Divide 12 by 200 and your churn rate for that month is 6 percent. The same math works for customers, members, or email subscribers.

Churn is the leak in the bucket. You can pour new customers in the top all year and still shrink if the leak is bigger than the pour. That is why churn matters as much as growth for anything sold on a subscription.

Decide upfront whether you are counting people who left or the money that left with them. Losing ten small accounts and losing one large one can look identical in a customer count and nothing alike in revenue.
